Shipboard VR: from damage control to design
نویسندگان
چکیده
V irtual reality efforts in the Information Technology Division of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) span mission planning, rehearsal, and execution; simulation-based design; and medicine. We devote much of our work to ship-based applications, presenting two such efforts in this article. One project focuses on experiments in shipboard firefighting to verify the effectiveness ofVR as a mission planning tool. The other project involves visualizing a preliminary design of a new Navy ship. Since that work did not extend into the actual design cycle, we can't quantify the results in terms of hours gained or costs saved. However, the design team and the program managers agreed that the VR visualization was worthwhile and provided a better understanding of the design.

VR Systems: Out from the Laboratory
In spite of the large amount of "hype" that accompanied virtual reality (VR) earlier this decade, the field has produced only a few examples of demonstrably useful systems. Systems must be fielded and validated to show that VR is useful for purposes other than academic research. This paper discusses two VR systems developed at the Naval Research Laboratory that have received validation by stati...

متن کاملA knowledge-based decision support system for shipboard damage control
The operational complexity of modern ships requires the use of advanced applications, called damage control systems (DCSs), able to assist crew members in the effective handling of dangerous events and accidents. In this article we describe the development of a knowledge-based decision support system (KDSS) integrated within a DCS designed for a national navy. The KDSS uses a hybrid design and ...
متن کاملDesign of robust shipboard power automation systems
Emergent power and automation technologies provide new opportunities and challenges for multi-disciplinary ship design. In particular, these dynamically interdependent systems require dependable, fault-tolerant control to efficiently manage limited resources and to respond to casualty conditions. Design of an electric warship engineering and damage control system of systems is considered as an ...
